Palpatine did not lie. he manipulated people into action based on misconception. truly brilliant really.-b- |
Actually, I have to agree with Geoff. To also quote Sun Tzu in The Art of War (Section IV - on Tactical Dispositions):
One may know how to conquer without being able to do it
Accordingly, Palpatine may know how to manipulate Anakin without being able to give him the power to save Padme that he promises him.
Sun Tzu also says (Section V - on Energy):
Simulated disorder postulates perfect discipline; simulated fear postulates courage; simulated weakness postulates strength
One can infer that simulated knowledge (such as the key to saving someone from dying) postulates uncertainty.

No, a man might admit when a woman is right, should a documented instance where it actually takes place ever occur. Until then, there will be no such admission.

::Looks at Jedi_Hajile's lifeless body::
What a tragedy...
::checks Jedi_Hajile's wallet:: (just kidding)
even more so when you consider that if we fired daggers/arrows at Eric everytime he open mouth/insert foot, we could recreate Jet Li's death in the movie "Hero"

I think the ones who have matured past a 6th grade level can, the rest try and hide their inability with failed attempts at acting superior.
In the case of Anakin, I think he got too wrapped up in the (illusion of) power that turning to the dark side offered him. Once he chose to side with Palpatine during the confrontation with Mace Windu, from then on out he's not making decisions using anything but his emotions/anger. When Padme confronts him, he's got this sorta wide eyed (false) optimism...like if the rest of the galaxy would just go along with HIS "certain point of view" on how things will work...everything will be fine. By contrast, Padme is listening to him with an increasing sense of "have you lost your damn mind?" at the way he so casually wants to dominate the galaxy.

Are you down with the fluffy quickness?
1337: n. 1. Nestled between 1336 and 1338, 1337 is commonly known as a number, or for the more advanced; an "integer"
2. Often misused to satisfy a laymen's ego, the self-proclaimed 1337 will misuse the title, pretending to hold "Xtr3m H4x0r" capabilties while in fact anonymously hassling n00b's with better things to do than play mindrot such as Everquest and Warcraft. |

...and we're back (on topic)
This subject motivated me to sit back and watch ROTS, just so that scene was fresh in my mind. What makes that scene interesting isn't whether or not Paly is using some kinda Sith technique to keep Anakin alive as much as how this is the one instance where he seems generally concerned for someone other then himself.
Now, do I think he's using some hiden secret to keep "crispy" alive long enough to get back to Coruscant...let's just say I don't think it's a coincinence that the Darth Vader assemby scene and Padme giving birth/dying scenes were intermixed.

Actually the full quote from that part goes with a little more:
2. To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
3. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy.
4. Hence the saying: One may know how to conquer without being able to do it.
I think Palpatine never really cared if he could or could not save people from dying, or even that he could or ever would. He needed Anakin's power to take over. And Palpatine knew how to get it, by using Padme to get to Anakin. Palpatine might have known that the only way to control what Anakin was, was to hold the little bait or Padme in front of him.
