Was Sidious behind the abduction of Shmi?

I found this poll on starwars.com
I thought it is a very interesting question. So what are your thoughts? Do you think that it is going to be a in an EU story sometime?
WAS it in an EU story?

No... it was the will of the Force. Surely a plot point this major would have been shown in the movie, or at least the deleted scenes if Lucas decided there wasn't enough time in the movie to show it.

Hmmm... That's interesting. It should have been. That would make a very interesting story...

I don't think Sidious was behind the abduction of Shmi but I think he had had some contact with Shmi because I think he was responsible for the existence of Anakin!

No. Palps is not omnicient. He had to plot to take over the galaxy politically, plot to slay all of the Jedi, keep a war going, and plot to convert his apprentice. I don't think as if he had time to mind-trick a whole bunch of Tuskens into kidnapping some otherwise unimiportant moisture farmer woman.

Interesting question to get some debate going...

...but I don't think Sidious had anything to do with Shmi's abduction, but I do think it was part of the Force's plan in the whole prophecy thing. I just think Palpatine gets too much credit for when bad things happen to good people.

And as we saw in ROTS, Palpatine had no problem using Shmi's death and the aftermath to draw Anakin over to the dark side. If Palpatine hadn't learned of Anakin and Padme's marriage, I have no doubt he would have used Shmi as a bargaining chip to Anakin's soul.

Not that it's impossible. I'd heard some speculation that the reason for Aurra Sing's 2.3 seconds of screen time in TPM was to convey the idea that Palpatine sent bounty hunters in search of the Queen's ship (in addition to Darth Maul)...much like Vader does in ESB.

I dont think that Sidious had anything to do w/ the abduction on Shmi, But I do think that It made Anakin push a bit more over the edge w/ his darker feelings as we saw how he reacted and the way he was talking to Padme after he got back. The way he was saying his power shouldve been stronger and how it was Obi Wans fault for holding him back. it gave him resentment for the Jedi right there..
I do agree w/ "And as we saw in ROTS, Palpatine had no problem using Shmi's death and the aftermath to draw Anakin over to the dark side. " Sidious did use it in a way to pull him over completely.. Anakin knew he couldnt let that happen to him agian w/ someone he loved, so off he went to the Dark Side..

After reading Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, I'm going to have to reaffirm my no... the book gave great insight into how Palpatine did intentionally arrange for Padme to wind up under Obi-Wan's and Anakin's protection so that she and Anakin could end up spending a lot of time together in AOTC, leading to his eventual exploitation of Anakin's feelings for her. However, the book made no mention of him arranging Shmi's abduction. I think that while his inner monologue was giving out expository information that had he would have also included this tidbit had he been behind it.
