| You know at the beginning when vader is standing at th bridge of his star destroyer watching the TIEs fly by? That is my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. Whenever i'm in a hotel with a big window the first thing i do is walk over to the window and start breathing like vader and invision TIEs flying around.

That's definatly one of the lasting images from the SW saga, especially after getting to see Anakin do the exact same thing on Naboo in AOTC.
The thing that has ESB my favorite chapter in the OT (possibly the entire saga) is the whole Yoda/training/jedi philosophy section. All of the things that have later been described as "Yoda-isms" and the jedi training process just make me want to really BE a jedi even more. I think this movie (prior to the prequels) really emphasised on what the JEDI were all about...and how Luke was joining a tradition that had gone on for centuries.
We even get to see his "training day" of sorts on Bespin. And while the results weren't as he'd have wanted...it was exciting to see Luke square off against the icon of evil.

| The characters in ANH are flat. Here they are complex - Leia isn't just the damsel in distress, Han isn't just a profiteer with a heart of gold underneath his hard exterior, Luke isn't a wide-eyed farmboy gone to be hero (Jack the Giant Killer) anymore. Even Chewbacca is shown with depth. We see the bond between Han and Chewie when Han is being tortured more than anywhere else.

Maybe the true reason ESB is the best is because most fans like sometimes when the bad guy wins!?!?!?!

Actually, the thing I like about ESB is how it "ends" (if you want to call it that) with such uncertainty. I mean, you can speculate that the good guys are gonna win, but you don't really know. Yeah, maybe they'll be able to stop the Empire, but at the same time, maybe they might not be able to rescue Han. And I said "ends" earlier because I don't think the movie truly has an ending, it pretty much just stops, and you as the audience are left wondering "so that's it? where's the rest?" Which I think is brilliant on George's part.

5. It surpasses GL's annoying tendancy for things to either black or white without allowing for shades of grey.

As to 5 - I don't think the moral compass is any less powerful here than in any of the other films. Vader is at his most menacing and evil here. The Imperials are evil - they massacre, take no prisoners, torture, conquer. The rebels are the good guys.
