How do you think Palpatine will become Emperor?

Ok, it' safe to say we all know Chancellor Palpatine eventually becomes Emperor of the Galactic Empire...the question is HOW and WHEN do you think he'll do it?

I've been reading some really good EU stories where he uses his role as Chancellor of the Republic, as well as his friends in low places, to set up the Republic for a series of defeats. Basically, he's playing both sides (directly or indirectly) against each other to benefit HIMSELF.

Let's assume the Republic wins the Clone Wars, you'd think somebody would notice when he doesn't give back those "emergency powers" he was given in AOTC. I mean it's not like one day he's the president of a democracy...and next morning he throws on a black bath-robe (no comments Don Wink

) and says "it's good to be da king"

Well, look in history o find examples of just that. If I remember right (my history knowledge is sort of lacking, so I may be getting some of the names wrong) there are several instances where democracys gave the president emergency dictatorial power and he never restored the democracy. I believe this was how Hitler gained control in Germany, and how Saddamm gained power in Iraq. Like I said, may have the names wrong though, but I know it has happened.

I know what you mean. Both in history and current events...there's plenty of examples of how men who ask for more power, seldom give it back when they said they would. Clone Wars vol 5 had some great issues, centered around the political "battle" of the CLONE WARS. I know alot of writers are inspired by the world around them, but the similarities are kinda frightening.

Personally, I'm thinking that at the end of the CLONE WARS everyone will be so wrapped up in the mission accomplished spin that nobody will stop to think how do you make someone hand over absolute power?

The story of ROTS will be an example of why the Romans never allowed their legions to enter the city.

Well, I'm guessing that the Republic beats the Separatists in the Clone Wars, considering the Empire is the organization of the two that still exists in the OT.

I kind of envision Palpatine's move to Emperor sorta like Isildor in the LOTR movies... just when he has the opportunity to destroy the enemy and throw away the powers, he refuses to for his own selfish purposes (i.e. his personal quest for power), causing the conflict to continue.

Just picture Jar Jar acting Elrond-esque...
"Supreme Chancellor, yousa needen to be given up yousa powers."
Palpy: "NO!"

The thought of it is just chilling...

I agree that Palpatine will not be returning those emergency powers once the threat from the Separatists is under control. Like Krash, I'm piecing this together from EU reading and speculation. Also I think that somehow Palpatine is going to twist things around so that the Jedi are perceived as "the bad guys" so he has an excuse for going after the Jedi that have survived the Clone Wars. Sad

I'm not certain how he will change the public's perception of the Jedi Question

but even in pre-Clone Wars times, some disliked the Jedi. Maybe he's going to say that Count Dooku organized the Separatist Movement and he was once a Jedi so maybe the Jedi were always behind the Separatist Movement. Twisted logic, I know but I can't figure out anything else.

I think Palpatine will walk into his quarters, and start humming the "Imperial March" in the refresher. He'll then walk into his dressing room, and instead of putting on his usual robes, he'll opt for a dark hooded robe, and admire himself in the mirror..."Hmm... this is comfortable...". Palpatine will pick up his new walking stick, tiwrl it around as he walks out the door, where two of his Royal Guards will flank him as they make their way to the Council Chambers. Confronting all the senators in the Republic, he'll proclaim-

"You want me to hand over those emergency powers..hmm.. let me consider this for a second...uhm...NOT!!!"

Some of You probably read the ep3 story book. I don't want to say any spoilers in here for people that don't want to know . Thats awesome how he takes on all 4 jedi. What I understand is Palpatine face is normal until He gets into with Mace ,and mace blocks the force powers palpatine shoots causing added stress on himself and thus overload of force powers being used. Unless I am wrong this is how he Transforms into
the evil Looking Palpatine rather than face switching like people think.
I could be wrong, But thats my take on it.

I think that one day, he just decided to say "you know...I like this power with no restrictions...I think I will call myself emperor!" Shocked

And yes, I see this as a parallel with history (then again Lucas loves to make it that way!)
