Has anyone thought about the origin of the Emperor's name? Well, I just happened to one day when I was really bored, and I came to a conclusion. In the days of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome had seven hills somewhere around it and in it. The emperor's suite and palace thing was on the hill called the (are you ready for this) the...PALATINE hill. So, in order to be less conspicuous, GL just stuck in a "p" and named his emperor after the home of the ancient emperors. How witty.

I always kind of assumed that myself. Now the emperors first name, that's a mystery. I think it's Bob. Emperor Robert "Bob" Palpatine.

I already suspected this, as well as an origin from the word "palpitate." From dictionary.com:

pal·pi·tate Audio pronunciation of "palpitate" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (plp-tt)
intr.v. pal·pi·tat·ed, pal·pi·tat·ing, pal·pi·tates

1. To move with a slight tremulous motion; tremble, shake, or quiver.
2. To beat with excessive rapidity; throb.

We all know Palpy has certainly shaken the foundations of the Republic.

In one of the books that talks about the movies you learn that GL got many of his ideas from the Roman Empire. So cool

I think the Romans stole the idea from George.

And even that story was stolen by the Romans. I could post an explanation on that one, if I can find the book I have on it...that is if it's worth posting for people.

I know. What I said was the story was stolen BY the Romans from other texts. I'm trying to find the book that contains the info on the plagerism...

If you're interested I was in Rome about 4 years ago, and actually went to Palatine Hill. If you're interested, I'll bring send you a link to my Yahoo phot album.

They mention the Roman influences on SW in the companion book to the "The Magic of Myth" exhibit, you may want to check that out.

Very little is known of Palpatine's origins (some have suspected that he erased any records to cover his Sith tracks)

I've read that almost all if not at least a lot of the names of people and places from the SW movies are from something in history, and George always seemed to like the Roman Empire and stuff (I remember reading once that after SW he wanted to do a mini-series or something with Rome). So that is a very cool find about the name....

Also, there is a region in Germany called Rhineland-Palatinate. They're known for their wine-growing.

You sure there's not a region called "Luke" that specializes in whine/wine? Laughing
