I remember a lengthy debate that usually is always going one somewhere....so let's have it here!

The Question: Can lightsabers work underwater?

I say yes, but the water would be instantaniously vaporized causing a major problem...(ie: if anyone has thrown water on burning thermite you will know what I'm talking about).

Lol! Yeah, I think some of them are water-proof (Plo Koon's?), but there's a part in the Jedi Apprentice book (#7? The Captive Temple) when Obi-Wan's lightsaber shorted out when it got water on it, if I remember correctly...

Kit Fisto's was waterproof in the Clone Wars cartoon. However if you try going in the water in the TPM video game, it will go out immediately. I think the general trend is that no, you cannot ignite it in water, however, the Clone Wars cartoon was over the top as it was, so they'd include something like a saber under water to keep the action fresh in the cartoon.

But in TPM, you could have it on....it was that Obi-wan forgot to set something that made it waterproof on, hence why Qui-Gon had to help him when they were first on Naboo....

So I think it is that people have way too much time to think about this, and that George just didn't really care so he let it go...

According to Splinter of the Mind's Eye, lightsabers work underwater. According to TPM Movie Novelization, the reason Obi was running from the STAP was because it shorted out while he was swimming. In most video games(TPM, JO, JA) it turns off when you enter water. In BF2, your lightsaber does not turn off when Yoda runs underwater in Dagobah. I don't think that counts, though, since you also don't lose health when you go underwater with Yoda.

Don't forget that in the game Obi-Wan, there are scenes in water were your saber works too. Obi can't swim with it on, but he can stand under falling water ie: a waterfall, or broken pipes, and it works fine.

You can't use your lightsaber underwater in KOTOR either.

Also in AOTC, on Kamino, it was raining, and Obi-Wan was able to use his lightsaber there.

Well there's a drastic difference between the lightsaber being activated in the presence of water, a la rain in AOTC or the Massassi Temple fight between Anakin and Asajj Ventress in the Clone Wars, and a lightsaber being completely submerged underwater, where the vast majority of sources say that it will not activate.
