Well this is a subject that has been boggling me ever since Episode I came out, and this whole prophecy thing came up. Anakin is generally accepted as "The Chosen One" by everyone in Episodes I-III. What exactely does the prophecy say, I haven't been able to find a word for word script of it anywhere. I understand it speaks of the one that will bring balance to the force, but what does that mean. It smacks of the whole "point of view" thing Obi-Wan talked about before. To me balance means to equal, so doesn't destroying the sith accutally UNbalance the force? I mean after all what is light without darkness? Good without evil? Without one and no basis for comparison you wouldn't have anything. But anyway, if the prophecy is correct, and a "chosen one" would come to balance the force, wouldn't that have actually been Luke? I mean he alone after all the Jedi were gone, faced Vader and turned him back so he could destroy the sith by killing Palpatine. Then after Anakin's death soon after, he was the only Jedi left. He was faced with the responsibility of rebuilding the Jedi, and could build it in a "balanced" way. Now the one thing I think would come up as a possible idea against this, is Anakin's conception by the Midiclorians. But that could go either way, maybe the midiclorians didn't create Anakin to be the chosen one. Maybe they created Anakin so he could Father the chosen one. The other arguement to which there is no real answer is did the midiclorians really create Anakin at all? Did Darth Plagious "the wise" influence the midiclorians to create Anakin? Did he do it knowing the prophecy of the "chosen one" to fool the Jedi as part of a plan to take over the galaxy, then his plan was taken over from him by Palpatine? After all it is clear that everything from episode I-III is part of Palpatine's plan to take over. Any thoughts on this?

Anakin is clearly the Chosen One. Lucas himself has acknowledged this many times in interviews. As far as the whole "balance of the Force prophecy," I think DarthZome summed it up best using the analogy of a balanced diet. To eat a balanced diet doesn't mean you eat as many sweets as you do vegetables and fruits; the same applies with the number of Jedi and Sith. The Force will be balanced when the Sith have been destroyed. Vader tosses Palpy down the Death Star II reactor, killing him, and also puts his own life at risk in the process. Thus both Sith are destroyed, the Force is in balance, and the prophecy is fulfilled.

Agree with Eric,I do.By destroying Palpatine,Anakin brings balance to the Force. What balance actually means is open for discussion, but for storytelling purposes,it means getting rid of the Sith, which Anakin does.'Balance'does mean equal, but it can also mean 'harmony'.It would be like someone who has cancer. Are they okay because they have an equal number of healthy and cancer cells? No,they're still sick.In order to be healthy, they have to get rid of the cancer completely.
