I was irritated when I heard that Hayden was the Anakin ghost but I wanted to see it before I made a decision. The first time I watched it I thought the scene didn't work as well. Then I watched it with the commentary; Anakin did not turn himself into a spirit. Lucas said it was Yoda and Obi-Wan who did it. Which would explain why Hayden looks a bit surprised at first. He looks down at himself, then around, before looking at Luke. I think when Yoda and Obi-Wan brought Anakin's spirit back they brought back the Anakin they knew and remembered, not Vader.
I was kinda disappointed to see the Jedi Temple. part of me always thougth Palpatine built his Imperial Palace on its ruins. But its Lucas' story not mine.

My favorite change to all of the DVDs is the inclusion of Hayden Christensen as Anakin's "spirit" at the end of Return of teh Jedi.
I saw "Jedi" as a kid when it first came out and since it is my favorite of the Star Wars movies, I have seen it countless times. I never had an attachment to Sebastian Shaw as Anakin. No disrespect to Mr. Shaw, but he was always just some old guy standing there with Obi-Wan and and Yoda. A great scene, but with little emotional impact for me. But now, when I see Hayden, I recall an Anakin who held his mother in his arms as she died, an Anakin who loved his wife deeply and passionatley, and an Anakin who truly wants to do the right thing but will make some very terrible choices that ruined his life. When I see Hayden's spirit standing there with Obi-wan and Yoda, it creates a feeling of satisfaction to see that he is returned to his self before those tragic choices were made. It makes for a more emotionally satisfying and happy ending for me.

I watched ROTJ (with commentary track) and that part about Hayden looking surprised starts to make more sense: Anakin didn't realize what was happening to him, and that it was Yoda and Obi-Wan (the "enlightened" jedi from the movie) that brought Anakin's spirit into a form Luke could see. Interesting concept, still sucks for Sebastian Shaw...but it makes more sense now.

I'm rather disappointed that the Jedi Temple shows up in the celebration, I'm not going to lie. Liz, Lauren and I have a rewrite of the prequels going, and the destruction of the Jedi Temple is exquisitely tragic. We were rather hoping that Lucas would turn out something as good to get rid of the temple, but apparently that's not in the books. How disappointing. I was actually looking forward to it.

Why would Palpatine leave the Jedi temple standing? Don't you think he'd have the place thoroughly raided, taken all the databanks, and destroyed it? Wouldn't he have wanted to prevent anyone from getting in there and learning the ways of the Jedi?

An important principle of war is to know your enemy. Perhaps Palpatine left the Jedi Temple in tact so that he could research the Jedi in case they ever did return.

AHHHHHHH...so that explains it!
I read somewhere about how Obi-wan and Yoda were able to become spirits(all in Ep. III) and I was wondering how Anakin found out? That explains it!

EDIT: Sorry to be a pain, but to protect the spoiler-sensitive people I edited your comment about the DVD changes. Feel free to post that in the Episode III forum though, perhaps in a new thread discussing connections between ROTS and the OT. ~Roseanna
