I just read a great article in Star Wars Insider #82 that addressed the topic of...just how powerful was the Empire in ANH?
| Quote: |
The "they" believe it or not is the Senate.
Some Expanded Universe source material may have been a bit overzealous in promoting an image of an utterly unstoppable Galactic Empire in this time frame- at least, compared to what we actually witness in the film. |
Basically if you look closely at the scene where Vader places Leia under arrest...he and the other Imperials are worried about something, Pablo's take on the matter (which I have come to agree with) is that they are still worried about how the Senate will respond to such an action.
| Quote: |
| During the early years, the Galactic Empire was its most draconian in the Outer Rim Territories, where it could act unsupervised far from the eyes of the Senate. But in the more cosmopolitan areas of the Core Worlds, it kowotwed to procedure and paid heed to public image |
First off...double points to Gryffindor for using the words "draconian" and "kowtowed" in the same paragraph
They even used the old ANH Radio Drama as an example of how Darth Vader and his boys couldn't do a thing...without catching her in the act.
| Quote: |
| The Death Star was to change everything |
Once the DS was operational, Palpatine disbands the Senate and destroys Alderaan..."in the interests of security." Only thing he wasn' counting on was a young jedi in training to drop a couple proton torpedoes down the ventilator shaft

Yes. I found it interesting in the Radio Drama how the Emperor declared a "state of emergency" just prior to ANH to garner even more power for himself and to further limit the rights of the beings of the galaxy.

Ok...all kidding aside (ewoks rule!) I think this article changed how I looked at the Empire in ANH. Without the Death Star, Palpatine was still kept somewhat in check by the Senate. Add to that how every "draconian" action by the Empire, only served to bring more people to the Rebel Alliance.
"The more star systems will slip through your fingers"
Leia was right, the more Palpatine and the Imperials tried to control people, the more people started to resist them.

Are you down with the fluffy quickness?
1337: n. 1. Nestled between 1336 and 1338, 1337 is commonly known as a number, or for the more advanced; an "integer"
2. Often misused to satisfy a laymen's ego, the self-proclaimed 1337 will misuse the title, pretending to hold "Xtr3m H4x0r" capabilties while in fact anonymously hassling n00b's with better things to do than play mindrot such as Everquest and Warcraft. |

When it comes to the 501st clonetroopers...I always go with the opinion of "Corpsie" the clonetrooper (not to be confused with his cousin the ewok) the one with the galaxy's worse case of heart burn.

As this is in the ANH forum, and not ROTS...let's try and focus more on the after-effects of "order 66" For all the bluster and swagger of the Empire, they still didn't have absolute power over the galaxy, until Palpatine took out the Senate.
